Hi to all. I need a little help with an old but perfectly working hplc. In
my lab I have been using a Beckman HPLC system coupled with an IBM model 55
SX computer. A couple of weeks ago the pc broke down and I have found
another one but I can't correctly configure the config.sys file of the new
IBM 55 sx and so I can't correctly boot the system Gold (my version is the
8.1 one). In Italy Beckman is unable to provide me any assistance and so I
could be forced to discard a perfectly working system................ Could
anyone who has the same system help me sending me the config sys file of the
55 sx? Thank you in advance for your help.

In my experience, Beckman have been very good about ensuring data and driver
migration between successive computer systems.

Gold may not work on a recent PC, for various reasons. I don't think old
computers are usable because the hard disks were relatively unreliable, and
they only use disks the bios "knows" about (number of cylinders, etc.).

Unless you're *very* short of funds, probably the best course of action is
to plead poverty and ask Beckman for a special price for a more recent
system.

This does highlight the old problem that the life expectancy of analytical
equipment greatly exceeds that of rapidly-evolving computer systems. Having
said that, it's surprising how many big research firms (pharmaceutical and
others) don't understand the well established economic advantages of
renewing working equipment regularly by tranches of 1/3rd or 1/2 of the
number installed. You don't make new cars with old robots. If you're from an
educational establishment, it would be worth trying to recuperate some
redundant industrial equipment - this is less readily available than it used
to be because of reluctance about health and safety responsibilities.

Regards
